Discretion

Proverbs 11:22
“Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.”

Titus 2:4-5
“That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love
their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good obedient to their own husbands, that
the word of God be not blasphemed.”

We are all called to be discreet but the Word of God specifically mentions women in these two verses. Discretion, by definition, is synonymous with discernment, maturity, wisdom, prudence, and care. In contrast, this means an indiscreet woman has no discernment, lacks maturity, is foolish, and uncaring--a dangerous combination. Biblically, no amount of beauty can make up for a lack of discretion. You can be Miss Universe here on Earth, but by biblical standards you can be a very rotten sight. Beauty fades but your character lasts a lifetime. As Christians we need to walk the walk and talk the talk. We need to live this out in our day to lives and be an example to others around us. Our words can save us or condemn us. Our actions are seen by our families (little eyes included), friends, and most importantly God. Characteristics of each type of woman are listed below. Consider which woman you have been modeling to those around you.

Indiscreet Women
  • Talk too much (she loves the sound of her own voice and does not take the time to listen)
  • Partake in foolish gossip (she can't wait until everyone knows the news)
  • Are flashy and love to show off in attitude & dress (she can't stand when the spotlight is not on her)
  • Is known for the wrong reasons (she is known for what she is)
  • Do kind deeds for others with a Pharasaical attitude (she wants others to see her good deeds and praise her)
Godly Women
  • Limit their words and and are slow to speak. They seek to be gentle and quiet. Proverbs 9:13 Proverbs 10:19,James 1:19
  • Are trustworthy Proverbs 11:13
  • Clothe themselves in respectable apparel, AND with modesty and self-control 1 Timothy 2:9
  • Strive to do the right thing and have a good reputation Proverbs 31:28 1 Timothy 3:7
  • Are industrious and does not have time to entertain gossip Proverbs 31:17,19

  2. "no amount of beauty can make up for a lack of discretion"

    Such good wisdom!

"are industrious and do not have time to entertain gossip"

Wise words for the age of social media! You don't have to physically say it anymore....which is more dangerous, I think!

Thanks for the great reminders and scriptures!

  3. I feel that our feministic society fuels much indiscretion. We, and young ladies today, are taught to "speak our minds" , to let our voice be heard and be "independent thinkers" and to not let anyone run us over. We are told we are not strong, confident women otherwise. Hogwash, all of it.
    Thanks for this post!

  4. I agree - there is too much indiscretion in the world today; especially with young women. I know a young woman who posts indiscreet photos of herself on her facebook page, then talks about how much she loves her children. I worry about the messages she's sending them. I try so hard to teach my daughter about modesty in dress (we're still working on modesty of mouth). But she's funny. I like to watch football and one day the cheerleaders were on the screen. My daughter said, "Put some more clothes on girls!" (she was about 5). At least something's sinking in!

  5. What a pertinent and great post: so convicting, and yet you didn't even write a terribly long post. You must practice what you preach. :) Thank you for sharing; I needed this.

  6. Love the picture! ;-) What a thought-provoking post and so full of truth. As the mother of four daughters I can attest to the challenges I face in trying to impart my (Godly) wisdom vs worldly wisdom to my girls. As others have commented above.. the world tries to turn our girls into something quite different to what God wants them to be.

    Thanks for sharing this!

  7. Great post!

Our culture does not value the same things that God does..which makes it a difficult road for us women, and in teaching our daughters....but as we well know, "Everything is possible with Christ Jesus who strengthens me". I know we have a higher calling than that of our flesh, and I'm thankful to have a family in which I can strive in modeling this.

    God Bless!
